Save Time and Money: Skip the Queue for Churaumi Aquarium Tickets

Buying Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium tickets at a convenience store is better value
Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium is essentially a must-do for first-time visitors to Okinawa. Beyond queuing at the venue or buying tickets online through platforms like KKDAY or KLOOK, you can also pick up tickets at convenience stores along the way — and at a better price. The regular admission is ¥2,180, while convenience store tickets are just ¥1,950. This saves you the hassle of queuing for parking and queuing again to buy tickets at the door. One tip: not every convenience store sells discounted Churaumi tickets, but those that do will display related information on their front doors and windows. Don't be discouraged if one store doesn't have them — just try the next one!
What?! Manatees, Sea Turtles, and Dolphins — Actually Free

The manatees in the Manatee Exhibit are incredibly lively and adorable
Although the aquarium itself is where most visitors spend their time, it is actually just one part of Ocean Expo Park — and the only part that requires a paid ticket. The park's Manatee Exhibit, Sea Turtle Exhibit, and Dolphin Lagoon are all free to enter without a ticket. While the promotional materials state that the Dolphin Theatre requires an additional fee, when we visited (December 2024), the theatre was under renovation, so the dolphin shows were temporarily moved to the Dolphin Lagoon and were free to watch. You can also purchase a small fish for ¥500 and, with the assistance of staff, feed the dolphins up close for a hands-on interaction.
Use AI to Identify Creatures at Churaumi — A Smart, Never-Boring Experience

The scan-type AI field guide inside Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium
The official Churaumi App features a "Scan-Type AI Field Guide" available in multiple languages, including Traditional Chinese. Once downloaded, simply point your phone's camera at any marine creature in the aquarium, and it will display the species name and relevant information in Chinese. Outside the aquarium, the AI Field Guide allows up to 10 free identifications per day — but inside Churaumi Aquarium, identifications are unlimited. With this identification tool in hand, wandering the aquarium is no longer just passive sightseeing. Get ready to expand your fish knowledge base significantly!

Ocean Blue Café
"Ocean Blue" is a café situated right beside the giant "Kuroshio Sea" tank inside Churaumi Aquarium. Here, you can enjoy an undisturbed, up-close view of the marine life drifting by while relaxing over lunch or afternoon tea — perfect for zoning out while watching the fish. Seating is divided into two types: "Reserved Seats" at an extra ¥500 with a 40-minute time limit, and free "General Seats" with a 60-minute limit. Reserved Seats cannot be booked in advance; you can only register on the spot and wait to be called. The registration counter is on the right side of the café entrance, with two separate sign-up boards for Reserved and General Seats. Staff will let you know the estimated wait time. For Reserved Seats, you'll need to provide your name and party size, then wait for your buzzer to go off before returning to the counter to check in and pay ¥500, after which you'll be directed to your designated seat number.
On the day we visited, we waited about 15 minutes before being seated at a Reserved Seat. We recommend heading to the "Kuroshio Sea" tank first and registering for a number right away, then leisurely enjoying the tank while you wait. Ocean Blue also has restrooms and a nursing room inside, making it a fantastic pit stop for parents with young children. We highly recommend stopping at Ocean Blue for a bite to eat and a drink — especially if you manage to snag a "Reserved Seat." In that intimate little space all to yourself, everyone instinctively falls quiet and gets lost watching the fish glide through the "Kuroshio Sea." It's easy to feel as though you've been pulled into the deep blue yourself.
Highly Recommended: Churaumi's Secret Gashapon Machines — Hidden Outside the Aquarium

The gashapon machine location outside Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium
Remember the aquarium cup figurine gashapon machines that caused such a sensation a while back? After touring the entire aquarium this time, we found that those cup figurines are completely gone. In their place are smaller marine creature display gashapon — and the most interesting ones are the "human" capsules. Churaumi has turned scenes like visitors posing next to fossils and divers swimming alongside dolphins inside the tanks (while being watched by other visitors) into gashapon figures. Wonderfully quirky.

But surely that can't be all! And indeed it isn't. After exiting the aquarium and heading toward the food truck area, you'll discover another set of larger gashapon machines — hiding right out there. Also produced by Churaumi Aquarium, they come in six designs corresponding to the Manatee Exhibit, Sea Turtle Exhibit, Dolphin Lagoon, Kuroshio Pool (the most content-rich capsule of the bunch), Whale Shark, and Stingray. Aside from the special edition, we collected all five of the other designs — each one is exquisitely detailed and adorable. I got the sea turtle capsule: the turtle inside is beautifully illustrated, and best of all, it's a turtle in the act of laying eggs. On the other side of the capsule, turtle eggs are nestled in the sand. Such a clever little touch — it completely won me over. The transparent outer capsule is included too, so you can display it right on your desk. Absolutely therapeutic. We strongly recommend giving these a spin!

All in all, a visit to Churaumi Aquarium — including lunch and the shows — takes around 3 to 4 hours. If you're bringing children, however, that calculation goes right out the window. Ocean Expo Park is far more than just the aquarium: it has 12 attractions in total, most of which are free. The "Children's Playland" alone features a sprawling trampoline area dedicated to kids that even adults can't help eyeing enviously. Spending an entire day at Ocean Expo Park? Absolutely no problem at all!
