Summer is here, and squeezing in three or more dives a day seems like an absolute must. Sometimes the excitement gets the better of us and we go from morning to night without finding time for a proper meal — which, for divers, is a serious drain on the body. During surface intervals on shore, we're often too lazy to go grab something to eat, or we're afraid that eating too much will make us queasy on the next dive. So we end up reaching for whatever convenience-store crackers are on hand — neither healthy nor nutritious. The Editor pats a steadily expanding belly and sighs at the sky: didn't someone say diving was supposed to make you slim?

Essential #1: Water! Water! Water!

Bring your own reusable cup to cut down on plastic bottle waste

Water is the one thing you absolutely need to keep topping up while diving. You may recall from your OW course that dehydration can increase the risk of decompression sickness (DCS). On top of that, the drop in water temperature and increase in water pressure during a dive cause blood to shift instinctively from the limbs toward the core, tricking the kidneys into thinking you've had too much fluid — so they speed up filtration and produce urine. That's why you often feel a strong urge to use the restroom right after a dive.

As mentioned above, dehydration can raise the risk of decompression sickness (DCS). The Editor even encountered a dive guide abroad who made it mandatory for every diver to drink 600 cc of water before suiting up (laughs). Staying hydrated doesn't just lower the risk of DCS — it also helps prevent heat exhaustion and a dry mouth, making the whole diving experience far more comfortable.

We'd also like to encourage everyone: when hydrating, try to reduce plastic bottle use by bringing your own reusable cup. Every little bit helps the ocean!

Essential Snack #1: Additive-Free Yeast Crackers

One small pack — gone in no time

During the surface interval between tanks, you rarely have enough time to eat a full meal, and eating too much risks an upset stomach on the next dive. Our recommendation: pick up some additive-free yeast crackers. A single small pack is easy to polish off on your own, and compared to snacks like shrimp crackers, they pack more nutrients and fewer calories.

Let's dig in — no messing around!!

The CrazyBear Diving Supply Diver Snack Pack comes in 6 flavors. They've thoughtfully grouped them into a "light" category — original and lightly salted — a dried fruit category — grape and cranberry — and a bold, beer-pairing category — wasabi and garlic chili. Let's demolish them one pack at a time!!

  • Little Sheep: Original Mixed Nuts (cashews, pecans, walnuts, hazelnuts, pistachios) — Yep, it's original! No added flavoring whatsoever — just pure, simple nut flavor. A great choice for anyone watching their salt intake. With five different nut varieties inside, you get to experience a range of textures and tastes in every handful.

  • Sea God / Coin Jellyfish: Lightly Salted Walnuts — Yep, it's lightly salted! (These two reviewers may have been phoning it in a little.) There's a thin, visible coating of salt crystals on the outside, and the saltiness is equally subtle — not salty at all, really. Paired with walnuts — widely regarded as the king of antioxidants — doctors recommend eating them at least 2–3 times a week. Beyond their high nutritional value, walnuts also help lower cholesterol (something scuba divers apparently need), support kidney health, and aid digestion. That said, too many walnuts isn't great either, so CrazyBear's individual portion packs are just the right size!

  • Garden Eel: Wasabi Almonds — This is probably the most brain-jolting product in the entire lineup. The wasabi hits your taste buds and shoots straight up to your head — a total wake-up call for a diver who's just dragged themselves out of the water in an exhausted heap. Almonds themselves are also nutritionally rich, known for helping lower cholesterol and preventing cardiovascular disease (seriously, do all scuba divers need to work on their cholesterol?!). And the garden eel on the packaging is absolutely adorable!!

  • Pygmy Seahorse: Grape Dried Fruit — One of the Editor's taste-test panel members had lived in the United States, and after one bite declared, "This has a California vibe~~." These aren't the tiny raisins you'd find sprinkled on a salad in Taiwan — these are big, plump dried grapes imported from Chile. They carry a faint, wine-like aroma that lingers in the mouth. You'll keep popping them in one after another!

  • Butt Egg (屁股蛋): Cranberry Dried Fruit — Apparently the packaging design was inspired by a certain underwater photography legend nicknamed "Ou-Qian Da." At first it wasn't obvious why cranberries were being associated with "butt eggs," but the two taste-test panel members speculated it might be because cranberries are particularly beneficial for women. Cranberries have demonstrated significant effectiveness in reducing recurrent urinary tract infections, with each cranberry containing 1.5 PACs (proanthocyanidins). To achieve a preventative effect against UTIs, you need to consume at least 36 mg of PACs per day — which works out to exactly 24 cranberries. That said, the best way to prevent UTIs is still: drink plenty of water (divers, drink up), and don't hold it in (if you feel the urge, just let it go in the ocean — laughs!).

  • Sea Turtle: Garlic Chili Cashews — Why save this one for last? Because it deserves special attention. You can actually see whole chili seeds and shredded chili skin in the mix! But it's not the chemically sharp heat of chili powder — instead it leaves a fragrant, lingering warmth you simply can't resist, reminiscent of the chili dipping sauce served with braised pork offal at a local snack stall. Based on the taste-test session, the moment this pack was cracked open, it was completely demolished by a certain dive instructor surnamed Lin who loves spicy food — the owner was left exclaiming that every future restock would be eaten up by that instructor! Highly recommended for divers who love bold flavors. It's the perfect pick-me-up for when you've just surfaced and need to get your energy back. The nutritional value of cashews goes without saying — finish the pack, and get ready for the next tank!

The above is the Editor's not-quite-an-unboxing, very-much-a-hunger-inducing share. The Editor is personally partial to the bold flavors — wasabi and garlic chili. It's our hope that more ocean- and diving-inspired merchandise continues to emerge — not because there's money to be made, but because it means the diving community is growing. The more people who pay attention to the ocean, the more who will have a chance to fall in love with it. CrazyBear also informed the Editor that they are currently developing ocean-friendly packaging, so that snackers can eat well while also reducing their impact on the natural world!
