A note from the Editor: The reason we're sharing this article is that we occasionally encounter freedivers training underwater in unsafe ways. We've seen weights and kettlebells dangling from descent lines, swinging like pendulums with the current — not only damaging the coral ecosystem below, but also posing a serious risk to scuba divers in the area. We hope this series by Weird Coach helps everyone establish safe and proper freediving training practices!
After completing a freediving course, many people want to continue practising or training with a dive buddy.
A lot of beginners don't know how to set up a float ball — and without one, they simply can't train properly.
The main purposes of setting up a float ball are:
- To train safely
- A correctly set-up float ball helps protect the underwater environment
- To alert boats to the presence of freedivers in the water, preventing accidents
Of course, a float ball serves many other purposes too — giving freedivers a place to rest, holding drinking water, and more.
If everyone learns how to set up a float ball and follows safe operating procedures, you can practise or train independently in an effective and safe manner!
Setting up your float ball correctly protects both yourself and the marine environment beneath you.
Next time, Weird Coach will share a video of the actual in-water setup process.
