Australia Dive Site Recommendation: Wolf Rock
Without a doubt, the most sought-after dive site in Australia in 2018 was Wolf Rock, located in Queensland. However, this dive site requires a 45-minute boat ride from the nearest port of Rainbow Beach. In addition to braving the rough waves, the relatively high cost of diving has kept it from being a top choice among Asian divers. So what makes Wolf Rock so incredibly compelling that it draws divers from all over the world?

Grey Nurse Sharks
Wolf Rock is famous for its Grey Nurse Sharks, but beyond these rarely-seen-in-Asia sharks, this dive site also offers sightings of schools of manta rays, Eagle Rays, and mola mola — and yes, we really do mean entire schools of them! The marine ecosystem here is remarkably rich and intact. Although visibility is not the best, for divers who love big creatures, this is nothing short of a dream dive site.
Best Diving Season
Grey Nurse Sharks at Wolf Rock are practically guaranteed year-round, but if you also want to catch the annual mass migration of humpback whales, plan your visit between June and October each year.

Dive Difficulty
Planning a trip to Wolf Rock doesn't require any special diving skills or drift diving experience. All you need is an Open Water Diver (PADI/SSI cert) certification or above and relatively recent, regular diving experience within the past year. That said, some sharks do linger at depths of 30m, so if you want a closer encounter with them, it's advisable to obtain your Advanced Open Water Diver (PADI cert) certification and dive with a dive computer.
