I'm 24 years old, a fresh graduate
Like so many young people, I feel a little lost about the future
This is a sentiment that young people often reflect on these days —
facing an uncertain and sluggish world at large,
finding themselves at a pivotal crossroads in life,
and often feeling powerless.
Many young people don't know which way to turn.
After university, some choose to continue on to graduate school,
but that only briefly delays the moment of reckoning.
Others choose to go abroad for a Gap Year adventure,
yet after a few years, they still have to come back and face the very choices they were trying to avoid.
People often say the ocean is a great teacher.
It's in the ocean that we find all kinds of insights about life.
Through my journey into freediving,
I found my direction for the future.
As I got to know the ocean, I also got to know myself —
understanding my body's limits and savoring my own blue world beneath the surface.
I also came to know a whole community of friends who share a love of freediving.
We came together because of our love for the sea —
no ulterior motives, no scheming, no struggle for power.
Just f r e e d i v i n g.
Along the way, I also discovered this beautiful little island — Xiaoliuqiu —
and the difficult challenges shared by Taiwan's outlying islands:
marine debris, balancing tourism and ecology.
One person's power is limited,
but by starting with ourselves, we can influence the people around us
and bring attention to everything this ocean is facing.
