The Chrysanthemum Island Ocean Splash Underwater Photography Competition has reached its second year. Although this year's event was disrupted by the pandemic, resulting in a significant drop in travel activity, the competition broke past records with nearly 300 outstanding submitted works.
The online public voting phase was equally exciting and intense, surpassing 5,200 votes within just one week.
Through this popularity vote, the competition helped more people discover the beauty and sorrow of our oceans.
This year's theme was The Beauty and Sorrow of Coral. Every participant saw something different through their underwater lens —
so among the submitted entries, alongside stunning and richly diverse underwater ecosystem photographs,
the photographers' lenses also gave us an unflinching look at the issues that demand greater public attention today.
Whether it is coral bleaching or abandoned fishing nets entangling reefs,
these issues are unfolding beneath the ocean's surface all around us, every single day.
That is why the Penghu County Aquatic Seed Propagation Center has been building an ocean garden and carrying out coral restoration in recent years (further reading: Adorning Chrysanthemum Island's Waters with Coral — You Too Can Be a "Coral Florist": A Coral Restoration Experience).
The Penghu County Government Agriculture and Fisheries Bureau has also been actively conducting underwater ghost net removal operations.
Going green isn't difficult — it starts with small steps in your own daily life.
Reduce plastic use, cut back on single-use waste, and embrace ocean-friendly green tourism practices.
Let's all take action together and make the underwater world a better place.
