The Penghu Haiyang Underwater Photography Competition has arrived at its second year. Despite the pandemic throwing a wrench into travel activities this year, the competition broke new ground — receiving nearly 300 outstanding entries.
The online voting stage was equally thrilling, with over 5,200 votes cast in just one week.
Through popular vote, the competition gave more members of the public a window into both the beauty and the sorrow of our oceans.
This year's theme was The Beauty and Sorrow of Coral. Every competitor brought a unique perspective to what they witnessed beneath the surface.
Among the entries, alongside richly beautiful shots of underwater ecosystems,
photographers' lenses also captured the issues that demand our greater attention in today's environment —
whether coral bleaching or abandoned fishing nets entangling marine life,
these realities are unfolding at every moment beneath the sea surface around us.
That is why the Penghu County Aquaculture Seed Farm has been building an ocean garden for coral restoration in recent years (further reading: Adorning Penghu's Waters with Coral — You Too Can Be a "Coral Florist": A Coral Restoration Experience).
The Penghu County Government Agriculture and Fisheries Bureau has also been actively carrying out underwater net-removal operations.
Going green isn't hard — it starts with small steps in your daily life.
Reduce plastic use, cut back on single-use waste, and embrace ocean-friendly green tourism.
Let's all take action together and make our underwater world a better place.
