Event participant Lomei shares her personal journey of buying dive gear.
At the event, diver and enthusiast Lomei shared her experience navigating the world of dive gear. With six years of diving under her belt, Lomei has dived at renowned destinations including Tulamben, Bohol in the Philippines, and Palau — and her passion for both scuba diving and freediving only continues to grow. Even now, as a certified Rescue Diver, Lomei still faces plenty of challenges when it comes to choosing the right equipment.
When I want to buy gear, I visit a lot of dive shops — but most staff members recommend products based on what they have in stock, rather than considering my body type, diving needs, or the situations I dive in. Many times, the products perform so differently underwater from what I had imagined.

She believes this approach to gear selection has major limitations — especially when products can't be tested in the water, leaving buyers with no way to gauge how they actually feel when submerged. That's precisely why an event like this is so valuable to her: she can personally try on and test every product, getting a real sense of their thrust, comfort, and handling. At this event, she came away with two particular takeaways — insights into long fins (freediving) made from different materials and with varying stiffness levels, as well as hands-on experience with a range of underwater scooters, giving her a much deeper understanding of what to look for when choosing gear.
Real Experience Makes Gear Selection Simple
When it comes to choosing dive equipment, every detail truly matters. Take long fins (freediving), for example — variations in material (plastic, carbon fiber, etc.), stiffness, and length all produce different sensations and thrust levels for each individual diver. As Lomei put it, she even wore two different fins at once during the event — one long fin and one short fin — and jumped straight into the water to compare the propulsion and feedback of each. That kind of hands-on experience is undoubtedly the most direct and effective way to make a decision.
At the event, you can also try out biomimetic fins and a back-mount BCD directly in the water.
