What Types of Regulators Are There?
In a previous episode of 【What's This Gear? #10】, when we introduced regulator brands,
a viewer wished to learn more about the differences between first stage regulator types —
specifically the piston, balanced piston, and diaphragm first stage regulators.
So this time on What's This Gear?, we've once again invited regulator maintenance expert and DiveMate Club instructor Lin Yu-Ping
to share with everyone the fundamental structural differences between these three types of regulators,
as well as which type of regulator
he recommends when choosing one for yourself.

Regulator Summary
Here's a quick summary for everyone:
A piston regulator will gradually reduce intermediate pressure as the scuba tank / cylinder is consumed during a dive.
At that point, you'll notice it becoming increasingly harder to breathe,
and this discomfort can cause panic in beginners or lead to a poor diving experience.
Balanced piston regulators and diaphragm regulators, on the other hand,
are designed differently in their construction and can maintain relatively stable intermediate pressure performance.
Therefore, instructor Yu-Ping recommends that if you're choosing a regulator for long-term personal use,
you should go straight for a balanced piston or diaphragm regulator.
Of course, every brand's regulators will differ slightly —
whether in structure, materials, or design philosophy.
Before purchasing, it's worth consulting a professional dive shop or instructor so you don't end up going down the wrong path!
