The Editor says: Scuba diving makes you happy?! Honestly, the Editor had never heard this argument before — until seeing a post shared on Facebook by Taiwan Dive instructor Japon Chen, who has long been deeply involved in ocean social enterprise issues. It suddenly hit home: being lucky enough to join the big family of divers really is something to be grateful for! Great activities deserve to be shared and spread far and wide — don't you think?! Full article reprinted from Taiwan Dive instructor Japon Chen's personal Facebook page.

What Does the Happiness of Scuba Diving Feel Like?

People who get to scuba dive are truly fortunate — and here's why!

Reason 1: Your Body Must Be in Great Shape!

Underwater, because of the pressure, scuba diving is essentially off-limits for people with high blood pressure, heart conditions, asthma, or a history of serious illness. In other words, if you're diving right now, you're a healthy, able-bodied human being — and that's worth celebrating.

Reason 2: You Have a Little Money to Spare!

Scuba diving requires a lot of gear — a buoyancy compensator (BCD), a regulator (for breathing), a stylish wetsuit and mask, a dive computer to keep you safe, plus countless accessories — and every one of them sends tens of thousands of NT$ flying out of your wallet. If you also fall in love with underwater photography, that's a whole other level of expense. So if you can afford all of this, your finances are clearly doing just fine.

Reason 3: You Are the Master of Your Own Time!

You've broken free from the grip of the daily grind and found a way to carve out time for yourself. Dive sites tend to be in fairly remote spots that take a while to reach, and a proper dive trip really needs at least two or three days to be worthwhile — yet some people genuinely can't pull themselves away from work for even that long. Time is like cleavage: you've got to squeeze to find it!

Reason 4: Let Nature Embrace You!

Scuba diving means heading to the coast — and that means sunshine, sandy beaches, and all the good things that come with them. Unlike breathing city smog, the sea air here is wonderfully fresh. Can't you just feel your lungs rejoicing? The vast ocean, the meeting of land and sea, endless space to clear your head — and the sunrises and sunsets by the water are simply something else. Truly magical.

Reason 5: Meet People from Around the World Who Love Life!

People who take up scuba diving tend to be outgoing and upbeat — as warm and radiant as the blazing sun. It's easy to forge friendships along the way with like-minded souls who love to travel, embrace life, seek adventure together, and are always up for trying something new.

Reason 6: Enter Inner Space!

Your travels are no longer limited to dry land — congratulations, you've just unlocked a ticket to the other 70% of the planet. Down on the seafloor, in what we call "inner space," you can experience weightless flight, encounter strange and wondrous creatures, and feel as though you've arrived on another world entirely.

Reason 7: Move Yourself!

Truth be told, many divers aren't in it for the big fish or the coral. A lot of the time, it's simply about being underwater — breathing slowly, watching your bubbles rise, drifting at 30 metres, fully present in that one perfect moment, marvelling at the incredible potential of the human body. Thirty metres — that's roughly the height of a nine-storey building. To float there effortlessly… now that's true happiness.

So what about you? Why do you want to dive?
