A grain of rice's journey doesn't actually end at harvest.
A while back, the Editor wrote about the Penghu biochar coral restoration bricks, and the response was warmer than expected. What people were most curious about, it turned out, was how "carbon sequestration" is actually calculated. But that article was really about the "second half" of this project — the ocean side. This time, we pull the camera back and start from a rice paddy in Yilan, tracing how this journey relays all the way from land to sea.
On July 18, 2026, under the witness of the Ministry of Agriculture, Shin Kong Security and the Shin Kong Life Charitable Foundation built on years of collaborative trust to launch a sustainable circular initiative — linking their long-standing commitments to the land and to the ocean. One side cultivates the earth; the other protects the sea. And what connects the two ends is a remarkably humble starting point: rice.

On Land: Starting from a Single Sustainably Farmed Rice Paddy
The story begins in Yilan. Shin Kong Security has long championed its "Sprout from Yilan" young farmer return program, supporting young people in coming back to their hometowns to grow organic rice using eco-friendly farming practices that care for the land. The harvested organic rice is then shared with vulnerable families across Taiwan, turning the land's bounty directly into a force for social care.
But their vision didn't stop at "growing good rice." Shin Kong Security brought together partners including Sprout from Yilan, the Hualien District Agricultural Research and Extension Station under the Ministry of Agriculture, and Lian Heng Biotech to collectively advance youth rural homecoming, eco-friendly agriculture, circular economy, and farmland biodiversity — through sustainable cultivation, bee habitat creation, ecological surveys, and returning biochar to the fields. The goal is for this land to nourish food while also becoming a habitat where diverse species can coexist.

The Rice Husk's Second Journey: From Agricultural Residue to Coral Restoration Bricks
After the rice is harvested, large quantities of rice husks and straw remain. In the past, these agricultural residues were often treated as "waste" — but this is precisely the most pivotal turning point in the entire cycle.
The baton was passed to the Shin Kong Life Charitable Foundation. The Foundation combined these husks and straw with the expertise of Kuang Tai Environmental Energy Co., Ltd. to produce biochar, then applied it in accordance with international standards to create biochar coral restoration bricks — giving them the dual function of carbon sequestration and enhancing natural carbon sinks. In other words, husks that would have been discarded are now stably "locked" into a brick resting on the seabed.

In the Ocean: Coral Grows Up, and So Does a Citizen Science Program
Once the restoration bricks were placed on the seabed of Penghu's Hang Bay, the story truly entered the ocean.

And the Shin Kong Life Charitable Foundation didn't let the story stop at "planting coral." The Foundation responded to the United Nations' International Year of Sustainable and Resilient Tourism initiative by launching a coral observer training program, and co-developed a "Coral Observation Curriculum" with National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology.
The concept is refreshingly simple: invite visitors who come to Penghu to dive, first teach them some basic coral conservation knowledge, and then — while they dive — ask them to help record the health, growth, and surrounding ecology of the coral. In doing so, travel becomes not just "appreciating the ocean," but an active part of marine conservation.

The observational data collected will be analyzed by the Department of Fisheries Technology and Management at National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology, building a long-term coral monitoring dataset to serve as a crucial foundation for coral restoration, biodiversity research, and marine conservation — accumulating Taiwan's precious marine ecological records, one data point at a time. From Land to Ocean: A Complete Sustainable Cycle
The most captivating aspect of this collaboration isn't simply the circular reuse of agricultural residues — it's that it genuinely links two major ecosystems: the terrestrial and the marine.
Shin Kong Security cultivates the land; the Shin Kong Life Charitable Foundation continues its commitment to ocean conservation. Each plays to its strengths, connecting what were once two parallel long-term endeavors into a single continuous line, and allowing resources and expertise from different fields to generate far greater impact. The value of a single grain of rice has thus extended all the way from the rice fields of Yilan to the seabed of Penghu.
Going forward, the Shin Kong Life Charitable Foundation and Shin Kong Security will deepen their collaboration, bringing in more partners from business, government, academia, and civil society to ensure that the work done on land continues to carry its value forward into the ocean. And we will continue to stand on the ocean side — faithfully documenting everything that happens along this path, and telling it to you.
