Most scuba divers carry a genuine love for the ocean. Not leaving trash in the water, skipping the sunscreen, and keeping hands off coral and marine life have all become widely shared values in the diving community. Yet a new study suggests that divers are inflicting damage on coral reefs that simply cannot be ignored. Dr. Bing Lin of the University of Sydney published a diving research report this past May, finding that divers are unconsciously causing real, physical damage to coral reefs — and that up to 80% of these incidents occur without any awareness on the diver's part. Before you worry about never being able to dive again, the report is explicit: this finding is not a rejection of dive travel. In fact, it recognizes diving as an important pillar of the ocean economy. The more pressing question is how to raise ocean stewardship awareness and cultivate the kind of self-discipline that every diver can practice.

The Numbers Don't Lie: An Accidental Collision Every 4 Minutes
In May 2026, Dr. Bing Lin of the University of Sydney published a landmark study in Conservation Letters. The research team conducted more than 300 hours of in-water field observation on 411 divers at popular dive sites in the Philippines and Indonesia. The report revealed a significant gap between what divers believe to be careful behavior underwater and the actual physical damage that coral reefs are absorbing. This empirical study forces us to reconsider whether, in the very act of connecting with nature through diving, we may be inadvertently accelerating the destruction of coral reefs — and how the recreational diving industry can find a path toward coexistence.
Just how large is this gap? The research recorded a total of 4,981 contact events with coral reefs. Divers made contact an average of 0.26 times per minute, equivalent to one collision roughly every 4 minutes. Of all these contacts, a striking 41% resulted in measurable physical damage — including direct breakage of coral, or fins kicking up sediment that settled over coral and smothered it by blocking sunlight.
Yet up to 80% of this damage occurred when divers were "completely unaware" it was happening.
This means that even divers who consciously try to protect coral are, through ordinary underwater movements — finning technique, turning around, or trying to hold position in a current — already applying pressure to the reef without realizing it. This gap between perception and reality is something we must confront honestly.
Are You "Overconfident" Underwater?
Perhaps you're reading this thinking: I'm experienced, my technique is solid, I would never damage coral. You might be wrong. Among the divers surveyed, as many as three-quarters (75%) rated their ability to avoid coral as "above average" compared to their peers. Yet when researchers compared divers' self-assessments with actual underwater video footage, they found that divers severely underestimated how often they touched the reef — by a factor of nearly 5. More bluntly, the divers with the least stable technique — those most likely to cause collisions — tended to overestimate their own abilities the most.
This overconfidence leads to a lack of situational awareness underwater. When we convince ourselves that "I'm being careful, my neutral buoyancy is good," we tend to overlook the fact that our gear is dragging behind us, or that the current created by our fins is sweeping across an entire section of coral.
Three Underwater "Blind Spots" That Amplify the Damage
Beyond psychological bias, the study also pinpointed specific scenarios and equipment choices that dramatically increase the likelihood of coral damage:

- Underwater photography and equipment dependency: Divers carrying underwater cameras, video cameras, or wearing gloves and using reef hooks made contact with coral at significantly higher rates than those who did not. Cameras easily distract divers from their surroundings, while gloves and reef hooks create a psychological sense of security that makes divers more likely to instinctively grab for a physical anchor when they lose their balance.
- The herd mentality effect: Underwater behavior is highly contagious. When one diver in a group moves in close or makes contact, others tend to lower their guard and follow, creating a cycle of collective damage.
- The collective frenzy when a star species appears: Spotting a Thresher Shark or a rare macro creature is often the highlight of a dive. Yet the data shows that during these "highlight moments," the probability of divers making intentional contact with coral to adjust their shooting angle or jockey for a better viewing position surges by 220%, and damaging contacts increase by 106%.
So Should I Still Dive?
Back to the core question: if diving can cause harm, should we stay out of the ocean?
Dr. Bing Lin emphasizes in the report that the research was never intended to discredit dive tourism. On the contrary, dive tourism is a critically important economic lifeline for coastal communities and developing nations. If diving were prohibited entirely, the resulting economic pressure could push communities toward far more destructive practices — such as intensive fishing or coastal development — which would deal a far heavier blow to marine ecosystems.
The real solution, therefore, is not to "stop diving" but to "change underwater behavior and culture." As the author puts it, "Divers must first understand that they are part of the problem before they can become part of the solution." As responsible divers, we can practice the following three acts of self-discipline on every future dive:
- Build a culture of "mutual underwater reminders": Break through the blind spot of overconfidence. After each dive, in addition to talking about what marine life you saw, ask your dive buddy or dive guide: "Was my neutral buoyancy stable when I was shooting photos? Did I accidentally kick anything?" Use objective feedback to correct your underwater posture.
- Strictly manage your camera and equipment: If your neutral buoyancy hasn't yet reached the level of muscle memory, resist the urge to bring a camera in strong currents or complex terrain. When watching a star species underwater, choose to keep a greater distance rather than put yourself in a position where you need a physical support to stabilize for a shot.
- Support dive shops that hold themselves to high sustainable tourism standards: Refuse to patronize operators who actively encourage clients to touch marine life or treat environmental guidelines as an afterthought. Direct your spending toward sustainable dive shops that rigorously enforce environmental standards during dive briefings and place real emphasis on buoyancy training.
From "Do No Harm" to "Active Stewardship": The Power of Citizen Participation
Sustainable diving isn't just about "not causing damage" — it can also mean "actively protecting." Beyond avoiding contact with coral, we can engage as citizen scientists to genuinely assist researchers in documenting, monitoring, and protecting coral reefs.


Scuba diving gives us the privilege of witnessing firsthand what may be the most beautiful ecosystem on Earth — and that privilege should come with commensurate responsibility. When we stop blindly trusting in our own "harmlessness" and enter the water with a spirit of reverence and honest self-reflection, dive tourism can genuinely become a positive force for coral protection.
