The "2025 AI with Purpose Global Summit Taipei 2025," co-hosted by Taiwan Mobile, the Global e-Sustainability Initiative (GeSI), and the Taiwan Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers' Association (TEEMA), concluded successfully today (the 29th). The summit's grand finale was the Digital with Purpose Awards ceremony, which recognized highly impactful sustainable innovations within the global ICT industry. This year, more than 24 projects from around the world competed for the honors. The "AI Ocean Data Center," a collaborative effort between Taiwan Mobile and social innovation team BlueTrend, emerged victorious, taking home the Biodiversity Award — a testament to the international competitiveness of Taiwan's homegrown AI technology in ecological conservation and sustainable development. This marks Taiwan Mobile's second consecutive year winning the prestigious international sustainability award, following the Smart City Award won by its shared-charging service "MyCharge" in 2024, demonstrating the company's tangible results and global impact in driving sustainable transformation through digital technology.

The award's technical evaluation was conducted by the Wuppertal Institute, a renowned German sustainability think tank, which assessed projects across five categories: Biodiversity, Education, Climate, Smart Cities, and Health & Well-being. Taiwan Mobile's "AI Ocean Data Center" was selected as the Biodiversity Award winner for its integration of AI image recognition, citizen participation, and local knowledge application, as well as its potential for scalability and policy support. The jury highly commended the project's concrete contribution to "achieving sustainable value through digital transformation."

Leveraging Technology for Positive Impact — Taiwan Mobile Fulfills Core DWP Commitments

Taiwan Mobile Vice President of Sustainability, Brand, and Public Relations Liu Li-Hui stated that the Digital with Purpose Awards recognizes not only technological innovation, but also the value of using digital capabilities to drive sustainable transformation. Since 2020, Taiwan Mobile has responded to the Digital with Purpose (DWP) initiative launched by GeSI, and has served as Co-Chair of the DWP Development Committee since 2023, continuously taking concrete action to fulfill its commitment that "technology should create positive impact for people and the planet." The Biodiversity Award received by the "AI Ocean Data Center" is the result of Taiwan Mobile's on-the-ground integration of local knowledge, AI technology, and citizen participation — and symbolizes Taiwan's capacity to contribute values and innovative solutions to the global dialogue on the convergence of digital and sustainable development. Going forward, Taiwan Mobile will continue to partner with domestic and international collaborators to inject new momentum into global net-zero and ecological sustainability goals.

VP Liu further noted that the ocean covers approximately 70% of the Earth's surface and is critical to maintaining global climate stability and ecosystem balance. Taiwan Mobile launched the "AI Ocean Data Center" in hopes of using technology to raise public awareness of ocean issues. The company is also actively engaged in the "Taiwan Mobile Blue Carbon Mangrove Restoration Project," aiming to harness the potential of ocean blue carbon resources — which have a carbon sequestration capacity more than four times greater than terrestrial green vegetation — yielding significant environmental benefits in terms of climate change mitigation, biodiversity enhancement, and coastal protection. Through cross-disciplinary action combining AI, natural restoration, and carbon governance, Taiwan Mobile demonstrates the company's commitment to climate stewardship.

Building Taiwan's First Ocean Knowledge Base — 9,000 Citizens Collaborate with AI to Protect the Ecosystem

Taiwan Mobile's "AI Ocean Data Center" integrates AI image recognition and generative AI Chatbot technology to build the first comprehensive marine species knowledge base in the Traditional Chinese-speaking world.

The "AI Ocean Data Center" integrates AI image recognition and generative AI Chatbot technology to create the first comprehensive marine species knowledge base in the Traditional Chinese-speaking world. It has mobilized more than 9,000 citizens to upload over 19,000 images, helping the AI system identify more than 150 common Taiwanese marine species and accumulating over 500,000 characters of knowledge training data. Through the collaboration of citizen science and AI, the project achieves effective collection and analysis of ocean data, advancing applications in marine education, tourism, and research. Funded, marketed, and technically supported by Taiwan Mobile through its "Tech The Dreamers 科技‧夢想+" platform, the initiative has established a foundational database covering Taiwan's northern waters and Palau dive sites, and has connected local governments and dive industry operators to build a knowledge base for marine education, tourism, and conservation policy. The jury commended the project for combining local practice, cross-sector integration, and international communication capacity, offering a substantive solution for sustainable transformation.

Technology Protecting Ecological Sustainability — Driving Positive Transformation for Biodiversity

Surrounded by the ocean on all sides, Taiwan is home to rich marine biodiversity, yet has long lacked systematic data integration. The "AI Ocean Data Center" bridges this gap and has become a key pillar of Taiwan Mobile's efforts to protect biodiversity. As early as 2022, Taiwan Mobile formulated its "Biodiversity Protection and Zero Deforestation Declaration," working with value chain partners to advance nature co-prosperity — including the "Taiwan Mobile Giant Salamander Protection Project" integrated with IoT, and the "Taiwan Mobile Blue Carbon" mangrove restoration project, a world-first composite mangrove aquaculture model for developing carbon-negative technologies. Taiwan Mobile has also led the industry by adopting the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) framework since 2023, and in 2024 published Taiwan's first TNFD report. The company aims to achieve a "net positive impact" on biodiversity and a zero-deforestation target by 2050.

Taiwan Mobile Responds to DWP Since 2020 — Demonstrating International Sustainability Leadership

The Digital with Purpose (DWP) initiative was launched by the Global e-Sustainability Initiative (GeSI) in 2020, calling on the global ICT industry to leverage digital technology to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement, while emphasizing the active mitigation of potential environmental and social impacts alongside the creation of long-term business value. Since becoming Taiwan's first corporate member of GeSI in 2016, Taiwan Mobile has continuously engaged in international sustainability initiatives. Beginning in 2020, it responded to the DWP initiative by formally signing the DWP Declaration, and was invited to serve as Co-Chair of the DWP Development Committee, actively participating in international decision-making and advocacy. The company has attended the DWP Global Summit consecutively since 2023; in 2024, Taiwan Mobile participated in the Digital with Purpose Global Summit held in Portugal, leading two keynote speeches and joining one international panel discussion, sharing Taiwan Mobile's practical experience and sustainability achievements with more than 4,000 ICT leaders and member representatives from around the world.

International Standards Strengthen Sustainability Governance — Recognized by Domestic and International Sustainability Rankings

Taiwan Mobile's commitment to sustainable development has earned it recognition from professional institutions at home and abroad. The company has been included in the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index for eight consecutive years, ranking among the top three in the global telecommunications industry. In terms of corporate governance, it has received the distinction of being in the top 5% of the Taiwan Stock Exchange Corporate Governance Evaluation for 11 consecutive years — one of only seven companies in Taiwan to achieve this record. In CDP's climate change assessments, Taiwan Mobile earned an A rating in 13 out of 16 evaluated categories, setting a new historical high in overall performance. Taiwan Mobile also actively strengthens investor relations and ESG governance, ensuring sound corporate operations and the continuous creation of long-term value for the market and investors through comprehensive information disclosure and clear sustainability goals and implementation strategies.
